How Can You Trust a Wedding Supplier? Top Tips & Signs to Look Out For

It’s one of the biggest life events you’ll ever plan for, and you want and deserve your wedding day to be perfect. But what happens if a supplier lets you down before the big day with little warning or even worse, on the day itself?!

Unfortunately, this does happen, and as one of the industry’s leading entertainment companies, we’ve sadly witnessed couples experiencing this first-hand and they have been left feeling devastated. Thankfully though they have come to us and we have been able to help, and often at very short notice, to make sure their day was the absolute best (and more) that they ever hoped for.

So, with this in mind, we’ve pulled together some top tips and important signs we tell our customers to look out for when choosing a wedding supplier.

1. Customer Review Checks and Recommendations

Checking reviews is one of the first things many of us now do naturally, but we’ve found that it’s good practice to look beyond Google Reviews as well. If you search a supplier’s name in any search engine you can scroll down and check out any other review platforms that the company has also invested in. Having a presence on a variety of review platforms is a supplier’s commitment to making reviewing their company as easily accessible as possible.

Generally, you should look for an average of 4+ stars, however with any amount of stars, we advise looking at the positive and the negative comments to see how the company has responded and handled any feedback. Mistakes and misunderstandings can happen, but the way they are handled can make all the difference!

Top Tips

  • Check the company’s website for a Reviews page or for reviews pulling through on their website. Check how recent the reviews are too.
  • Check the company’s Google Business Profile and look for any reviews there.
  • Look for a Trustpilot profile.
  • Look at Social Media Reviews and Recommendations e.g. Facebook
  • Look out for alternative review platforms like Reviews.io or Yell.com

2. Portfolio Quality Checks

Is the supplier an entertainer, photographer, videographer, wedding cake maker or wedding stationery company? It sounds obvious, but check the quality of their offerings through galleries, video footage and photography on their company website and social media channels.

3. Companies House Checks

Not sure if your supplier is officially registered as a Limited Company? Here’s some ways you can check it out for extra peace of mind.

Top Tips

  • You can check a supplier’s Limited or Ltd company information and trading details on the official Companies House website.
  • Before searching just check if the supplier’s company name is the same as their trading name. This information should be available on their website, perhaps in their Terms and Conditions.
  • The Companies House register is a good place to fact-check how long a company has been established as a Limited company through its date of incorporation.

4. Registered Trademarks

Another indicator of how established and how serious a company is, is if they have invested in registering their brand name as a trademark to protect it.

  • A brand with an officially registered trademark looks like this… Silver Service Singers®

Top Tips

  • A registered trademark isn’t always relevant to all businesses but a company with a registered trademark will generally show this on their website and other marketing channels to signify that the brand is protected.

5. Fact-Check Any Awards or Claims

As the old saying goes… if it sounds to good to be true it probably is! We pride ourselves on being the highest-rated Singing Waiter company with the most verified reviews. We claim this because we’ve counted them all, and we know we have over 2000 customer reviews!

Your wedding is one of the most important days of your life so spending some time doing a bit of a deep dive into any claims made can really help put your mind at rest.

Top Tips

  • Look into any awards and accolades. Are they legitimate? Are they or other winners and runners up also listed on the award’s website?
  • Some suppliers require specific licences in order to operate e.g. for wedding videographers offering drone shoots, check for evidence of a drone operators licence which is required for commercial videography.
  • Check out the About Us page on a supplier’s website and fact-check any claims made here.

6. Terms and Conditions

All companies have terms and conditions of trading. Check if their terms and conditions are visible and easy to understand.

Top Tips

  • Check their website for a copy of their terms and conditions. These are sometimes linked from the footer of the website.
  • Terms and conditions should also be available to view from the moment you begin transacting with the company.

7. Valuing Your Privacy

Your privacy and your data is important. There are things you can check to make sure a company is treating both with respect and in accordance with your rights and the law.

When you land on a website does the website present you with a Cookie Banner? That annoying (but very important) pop-up banner? Did you know that as well as asking you to Accept the cookies, the company should also make it easy for you to Decline the cookies. This option should be highly visible and not hidden away. This is to give you the absolute choice in whether or not you are happy for your anonymised website clicks and your browsing activity to be tracked.

With regard to your data, for example if you provide your data through an online form the data should be being stored securely and you should always be offered the opportunity to opt-out easily from receiving any further marketing from the company. If you make a request to be removed from any of their databases, your request must be upheld and actioned as soon as possible. You can request confirmation that your request has been actioned, but the company should confirm this anyway.

8. Insurance Checks

Wedding suppliers who interact with you and your guests on the wedding day, should also hold public liability insurance. Your venue will usually as for copies of any suppliers insurance documents, so this is something you can check in advance.

9. Price and Package Comparison Checks

Last but not least, weddings can be expensive all round and in your quest to manage your budget you will definitely be comparing prices to get the most out of your spend. So on this note we would also advise being cautious of the suppliers who are far cheaper than any of the others.

Top Tips

  • As well as thinking about why a price might be high, also think about why a price might be low.
  • Check the details of any packages being offered. Are the prices reflective of what is actually included?
  • Will there be any ‘hidden’ extras added on further down the line that you need to know about.
  • Ask for justification on high and low prices.
